Please keep in mind that sailing plans are written in the sand and change with the ebb and flow of the tides. 

We started off by getting settled on the boat. There were lots of trips to Costco, Walmart and West Marine as we stocked up the boat with almost everything we needed. The kids personalized their rooms and started out their home schooling routine. This didn’t really get off to a good start. Welles rolled up his sleeves and finished installing lots of equipment. We got some help putting up our new sails and hopped over to the USVI to pick up all our new SCUBA diving gear. 

We endured a wretched 58 hour sail to Bonaire, but then made the best of our two excellent weeks in the Dutch Caribbean. We hadn’t anticipated spending quite so much time exploring Bonaire, but it took a while for a weather window to open up so that we could sail towards Panama. We’re now cruising offshore of the Colombian coast towards Colon, Panama where we’ll line up to cross through the Panama Canal. Once we reach the Pacific, the idea is to sit tight outside of Panama City while we re-provision, order spare parts and wait for the right weather window to set sail across the Pacific.

This will be up to 27 days of blue water where we’ll be trading off on watch so that someone is at the helm 24/7. The horizon will be unchanging, so we’ll have to come up with ways of breaking up the weeks and peppering the days with memorable moments. It’s unclear whether the conditions will make it possible to double down on home schooling so that we can free ourselves up when we finally arrive in the Marquesas.

We’re hoping to arrive in Nua Hiva by early April. By then, everyone will be desperate to get onto land and stretch our legs.
